Therapy
What is one on one therapy?
One on one therapy is a process to help you explore and address your day to day challenges in a better way. In therapy, you meet a therapist or a psychiatrist to work with concerns like stress, anxiety, sleep, depression, trauma, problematic relationships and other mental or emotional distress. Therapy also aids those individuals who would like to improve and enhance their performance in their daily lives with better focus, confidence and social skills.
Am I "crazy" or is "something wrong with me" if I seek a mental health professional's help?
No! It is very responsible for you to take this step towards getting better and heal. It does not mean "you are crazy", or that "something is wrong with you" if you take care of your psychological and emotional health.
How soon can I feel better? How many sessions will I need to be okay?
Therapy is a transformative, subjective and experiential process. One cannot rush it. It is like germination of the seed where watering frequently doesn't guarantee that the process will become faster. It is collaborative work and one needs to engage fully in sessions to start seeing changes and/or feel better.
What are the common concerns that therapy can help resolve?
Therapy can help address concerns such as stress, anxiety, sleep, depression, trauma, procrastination, work-life imbalance, difficulty in communication, problematic relationships and other mental or emotional distresses. Please refer to this list for details on the types of concerns we work with.
How can therapy help?
Therapy is for anyone who is trying to be a better version of themselves and would like to thrive. It helps you in gaining perspective about a certain situation, analyse it and take measures to resolve the concern while being mindful. Therapy can be helpful for people who are looking to talk openly about what they're feeling and thinking inside out in a safe space with a professional who is non-judgemental, non-directive, objective and unbiased.
What do I do if therapy doesn't help?
If therapy is not working for you, there are other options that can help you feel better. In such a scenario, the first person you should talk to is your therapist. They may opt to change their therapy approach, explore more “homework” options for you, or even refer you to another therapist.
Who can benefit from therapy?/ Who can go for therapy?
Everyone! Therapy is a collaborative process and one understands that its not only the therapist who is responsible for changing a client's life. Additionally, people who are open to introspect, share their feelings, are psychologically minded and are solution-oriented can also seek/ benefit from therapy.
What to expect from a therapy session?
Therapy sessions can help individuals vent out feelings/emotions in a non-judgemental and safe space. This can be a cathartic experience. You may feel lighter and less stressed after attending a session with your therapist. However, transformation is an integral part of therapy and it may not necessarily bring relief after each session. Over time, it does help you gain an understanding of your feelings/emotions and how they impact your thoughts, behaviour or actions in daily life.
What if I don't like it?/ Should psychotherapy feel difficult?
It is quite natural to not like all your therapy sessions. Some sessions may bring to the surface uncomfortable emotions, feelings or thoughts that could have been suppressed for a while, and so it's not necessarily a fun ride always!
Can you prevent mental health problems?
Yes! It is very similar to how we try and stay physically healthy to prevent medical problems. Similarly, it is possible to prevent psychological problems by seeking professional help at the right time.
How do I know if I'm emotionally unwell?
By looking for signs in day to day to functioning and if there are any difficulties in carrying them out for a considerable amount of time.
How many session do I have to opt for ?
Every person undergoing therapy has different needs, so the total number of sessions you might require are non-determinable at the onset of your therapy. Your therapist and you can mutually decide on the frequency of your sessions as well as a program on a case by case basis.
How do I identify the kind of mental health concern I have?
Do not self-diagnose! Always seek a professional's help to figure out what is causing you emotional or psychological distress.
What is the difference between psychiatry, psychotherapy, psychology and counselling?
Psychologists/ therapists/counsellors are individuals who have specific training in providing mental health interventions. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialise in treating mental health conditions with medications. Some, but not all, psychiatrists have additional training in psychotherapy. Psychotherapists are experts on human development and pathology and are experts in talk therapy. They aim to tackle concerns in an in-depth manner assisting to bring changes in thinking patterns, behaviour and personality. Psychologists have academic degrees in understanding the science of cognition and human behaviour. Clinical and Counselling Psychologists can have additional post-graduate training as counsellors (talk therapy). Clinical Psychologists are licensed practitioners who are specifically trained in more severe mental health disorders. Counsellors generally tend to work with a more problem/ solution focus rather than personality change.
Do I need psychotherapy / counselling/ alternate forms of therapy?
This decision is solely based on what you are comfortable with in the beginning. However, eventually if the therapist thinks that you might benefit from another modality then they will refer you to another therapist/ specialist.
Why won't my therapist / counsellor give me advice?
The aim of therapy is eventually to enable you to know yourself better and navigate life authentically, making more positive and helpful choices. This means relying confidently on your own judgement. It is, thus, ineffective for your therapist to give you advice or tell you what they think would be the best decision about your life. Considering only you know best and you are the best judge of what works for you, withholding advice is in favour of helping you and enabling you to become your own therapist.
Why won't my therapist / counsellor answer questions about herself/himself?
Understanding why your therapist doesn't talk about themselves or encourage self-disclosure can be difficult. However, this is a very important aspect of psychotherapy/counselling. You may think that knowing more details about your therapist may make you feel more comfortable sharing your private thoughts and feelings with them; however, in most cases, it has proven to be otherwise. Knowing personal details, likes and dislikes about your therapist might make you less comfortable talking about certain aspects of your life or you may unintentionally withhold sharing the things that they don't agree to. This can disrupt the therapeutic relationship.
Does what we talk about in therapy remain fully confidential?
Confidentiality is a pillar of building rapport and trust in a client - therapist relationship. The therapist may breach confidentiality in case the client engages in harm to self or harm to others, and is subject to some legal and professional ethical exemptions.
How frequently should I meet the Therapist/Psychiatrist?
The frequency of your sessions can be mutually decided upon by your therapist and you.
I have taken a couple of sessions - why am I not satisfied with the result?
Considering therapy is a transformative, subjective and highly experiential process, it is not possible to pre-determine the number of sessions required to start observing changes or to even feel better. Hence, the outcome of therapy sessions vary from person to person. Seeking resolution of concerns can lead to discomfort as well as changes that may not be originally intended/ expected and therefore may lead to dissatisfaction.
What can I do if I am distressed in between sessions?
Unfortunately, your therapist/psychologist might not be able to attend to your calls always, as they will be attending other sessions. You will be provided with the therapist’s work number where the therapist will have access to WhatsApp messages/calls, phone calls and emails. Therapists will only be able to respond to emergency situations, and during work hours. In case of a delayed response from the therapist, it could mean that they are attending to another client, and would get back to you as they understand you are trying to get in touch with them. In the meantime, you could reach out to the organization and a team member will try responding to your queries as soon as possible.
Do you prescribe medications?
It would be useful to know that psychologists/therapists/counsellors are not eligible to prescribe any sort of pharmacological interventions, however, they can recommend meeting a psychiatrist if necessary.
I've been dissatisfied with other therapists and clinics in the past. What is going to make this experience different at Authentic Living?
You need to resonate with your therapist. It is important that you feel good about meeting your therapist. If ever, you are not comfortable with your therapist during the first few meetings, then it may not be a great idea to continue. It can take some time to find the right therapist and Authentic Living gives you space to explore this 'right fit'.
What if my therapist thinks I may need medication?
We reccomend you trust your therapist's clinical judgement. However, the psychiatrist may be the best judge in analysing if or not you need medications and you can still make .an informed decision about your medications. Our therpist can refer you to one of our consulting psychiatrists.
How will I know if I am improving or making progress in therapy?
Start observing if there are any functional changes in terms of emotions, feelings, thoughts, behaviours, sleeping and eating patterns, relationships, work etc. - big or small! You can also reflect upon these changes during your therapy journey.
What should I do if I'm worried about a friend or relative who needs professional help?
Gently encouraging your loved one to initiate seeking appropriate support would be helpful to start with. Therapy will not be useful if someone is forced to seek professional help as there would be a lot of resistance to change and mental blocks that could be counterproductive.
